Justice for all is a nice idea, but does it really happen in our courtrooms when lawyer fees seem to be outside of the average person’s budget? Can the door to justice in a free society really close?

Critical Hours Can Fly By If Not Managed Well

By Stacy Whelchel

Managing time photo

If time flies during your day and important work is still left to be done, are you using your minutes as efficiently as possible?

There will always be detractors such as daily living tasks and unexpected problems, but with the allotment of time for necessities must come the minutes and hours set aside for building your Pre-Paid Legal business, since success is mostly likely on your calendar.

The U.S. Small Business Administration has created a helpful “making time” list that could benefit you this instant:

  • Start with the most worrisome task. Start the morning, afternoon, or evening with the most worrisome task before you. This will reduce your anxiety level for the next task.
  • Complete deadline work early. Not only will this reduce stress and lighten your work schedule, but it will also give you more self-confidence about managing your schedule.
  • Know your capacity for stress. When you are hitting overload, take the break you need (even if it is a short one) when you need it.
  • Stay organized. Take time at the end of each day to briefly organize your desk and make reminder lists of tasks for the next day or week.
  • Divide up your time. Decide how much time to spend on business development, personal needs, volunteerism, and family.

Time is valuable and irreplaceable. Do you use yours wisely?

Erasing the Fear of Failure

By Stacy Whelchel

Fear of failure story photo

I once listened to one of the company’s top Associates discuss his first solo presentation to a group; it took several trips driving around the block before he built up enough courage to just enter the business. The result was a successful meeting and the birth of a legendary Pre-Paid Legal career.

An initial call or visit with a prospective member, recruit or group account can be an intimidating experience, no matter how many times you’ve circled the neighborhood, or presented the benefits of a PPL family plan.

The good news is that you are not alone because the Pre-Paid Legal Home Office wants you to succeed to the level you desire, and we are not the only ones on your support team.  Your upline and Regional Vice President(s) are prepared to answer your questions and address concerns too.

Many confidence-building tips are also incorporated in the company’s Success Guide for Associates:

  • Keep a positive mental attitude and surround yourself with positive people.
  • Attend weekly meetings.
  • When you’re down and feel negative, talk to your upline.
  • When you’re up and feel positive, talk to your downline.
  • Read all your Pre-Paid Legal material.
  • Set your daily, weekly, monthly, yearly and five-year goals.

If you’d like to contact your RVP and don’t have the information handy, click on “My Statistics” after clicking the "Account Settings" tab on the Associates Only home page . If you need a copy of the Success Guide, look under the “Resources” tab on Associates Only and you’ll find the latest version ready for printing and reading before your next drive around the block.

What will you spend $17 on this month?

by Adam Huckeby

$16 will

What will $17 buy?  A pizza (maybe two, depending on where you buy your pizza), a CD (for those of us who still buy music in a store), you might even be able to take a date to a movie (forget the concessions though).  So, why would you spend $17 a month for a Pre-Paid Legal Family Plan?  What if you were able to see a great return on your investment in the VERY FIRST WEEK after you buy your membership – or during that FIRST $17 month!?  What if year after year you could realize an incredible return with your membership for doing something that most people need to do anyway?

The Pre-Paid Legal Family Plan membership provides Will preparation for the member and spouse (spouse is generally $20, but if completed at the same time, and within the first sixty (60) days of your membership it's also included at no additional cost).  That’s TWO Wills that meet the needs of most North Americans.  With Pre-Paid Legal your Wills are prepared by lawyers who are experienced in the area of law dealing with Will preparation.  Not only that, after you send in your questionnaire, if your lawyer has any questions or concerns about how you’ve requested your Will to be prepared (eg…if a request may not be in your best interest from a tax perspective, or your disbursement of your estate may be more likely to be contested because of the manner in which you’ve indicated disbursement to occur), then a he/she will call you to ask questions and give advice before your Will is prepared and mailed to you.

So, let’s review, for as little as $17 a month, you receive two Wills prepared (for you and your spouse) at no additional cost, in addition to MANY MANY other benefits that can help you throughout the year.

What would having a Will prepared by an experienced lawyer cost you outside of a legal plan membership?  Would you know where to go?  Unfortunately, a quick internet search on “cost of legal services” and “cost to prepare a Will” was unsuccessful in easily finding sites that provide straight forward pricing for Will preparation.  I suppose you could flip through your local yellow pages and find a lawyer to call and get a price quote.  I DID find several legal forms sites that offered Will preparation services.

Did you know that you can buy a Will form online – and even have an online legal forms company prepare it for you for as little as $59.95 (prices vary, but the online legal forms site pricing seems comparable.  This price was found at a well-known and reputable legal forms site at the time of this article)…but often, the disclaimers on these sites point to the need for an attorney – and “preparation services” are little more than an online form that you fill out to populate their standard Will form.  On a popular legal forms site, this is a sample of the disclaimer that applies to their legal forms:  “[This Online Legal Form Company] provides Legal Information which is not legal advice.  Legal information informs you of the law and your rights but does not advise you what course of action to take for your situation.  Legal advice is what lawyers provide.”

While these online companies DO provide quite a range of legal documents and forms, what they don’t seem to provide is that extra, and we believe, a necessary, step – a real lawyer’s advice and assistance.  Blank forms may be legal documents, probably even prepared by experienced attorneys, but like many things in life, it’s not only important to be sure you have the right tool for the job, but it’s critical that you know how to use that tool.  We believe advice from a lawyer is critical when dealing with any legally binding document - particularly one that is designed to look after those you love when you’re no longer able.

With Pre-Paid Legal, you not only get two Wills prepared by a lawyer (who will provide advice if needed), but you also receive yearly updates (no charge for the member, $20 for spouse).  All for as little as $17/month!  If the Will preparation benefit were the only thing you received, we believe it would be well worth the $17 per month (or $204/year).  However, with Pre-Paid Legal, you get so much more.  And, as life happens for a Pre-Paid Legal member, his/her Pre-Paid Legal Lawyers stand ready to advise and assist.

Talk with a Pre-Paid Legal Independent Associate today to learn more about how you can get a Pre-Paid Legal membership!

NOTE:  Pre-Paid Legal membership plan benefits and costs vary by state and province, the above information is for illustrative purposes only. For plan details, benefits, and exclusions, consult a plan brochure - available by contacting any Pre-Paid Legal Independent Associate.

The Green Light

The-green-light-logo_final

We finished October on a high note and some managers say it may be their best month ever.  With the blastoff launch well underway, we can anticipate another great week and, no doubt, a strong November.

Here’s The Green Light:

Hal/Susan Faresh Report – Hal, as usual, is a multi-tasking master.  While keeping busy with phone interviews, PBR’s and one-on-one presentations, he’s also contacting inactive associates in his downline (to help bring them back on board).  RM Becky Mello has started a new luncheon in Modesto, California and she’s working hard to grow her central state region.  Hal also reports that Aaron Gonzales of Sacramento has demonstrated his leadership in meeting the growth challenges in the Sacramento area.  As Hal puts it, “Aaron never lets anything get in the way of conducting business in the highest professional manner.”  This coming Saturday there will be tool blitzes in both San Jose (organized by Kai Deering) and San Francisco (organized by Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Ward).  In addition, Oregon will host a group school this weekend and the Pacific Northwest will promote the upcoming mutli-site APT events on November 14.

Ross/Cindy Chantrel Report – Last week, John Mallott was the guest speaker for two standing room only events in St. Louis and he also conducted excellent follow-up training and leadership events.  In Kansas City, Mark Brown was the guest speaker at a Friday luncheon and Super Saturday event and small business training on Sunday.  Ross says since the event he’s been contacted by many associates telling him that Mark’s presentation helped them understand the PPD “big picture” in a new light.  This week, Advanced Product Training is being promoted at each of the 10 evening briefings and 6 luncheons in the region.  Ross mentions that Andrea Wacker (in Colorado Springs) has developed an effective “Will Workshop” that has been conducted in the Denver market and that is worth consideration in other markets.

Brooks Werkheiser Report – Brooks says the recent “Alabama Blitz” is the type of event that can help “catapult” the state to the next level.  Over in Greenville, Mississippi, Rodney and Thao Somerville were guests for a Friday night meeting with more than 50 people, including 30 guests.  Also in Mississippi, there was a Super Saturday in Hattiesburg, which was organized by David Hughes, Dale Paterson and Mark Alexander.  Scott and Missy Hamontree of Louisiana report that October was there best month to date and they have added new recruits in Monroe, Ruston and Shreveport.  Kudos to Mississippians Otis Clark (who just qualified as ED) and Joseph Hughes (who achieved director status in only a few weeks).

Darin/Linda Kidd Report – Darin reports that October was a great month and he anticipates November will be strong for Virginia and West Virginia.  Maybe that’s why he’s ordering 30,000 blastoff cards, 3,000 blastoff DVD’s and other supplies.  Jesse MacPhearson is organizing a Super Saturday for this month and more than 200 tickets have been pre-sold.  Fred Duff, Dave Savula and Agar Thomas will participate in the training for the event. In Charlottesville, Virginia, Robert Gilbert is planning a new weekly briefing and a Friday luncheon.  In Tidewater, Ken Roebuck has a briefing scheduled for the 3rd and a Player’s Club event with Patrick Shaw this coming Saturday.  Olander Washington in central Virginia has meetings scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays and a Super Saturday set for November 14.  In West Virginia, Bev Stump is hosting a meeting on November 11, which is an afternoon event they plan to host on a monthly basis.  Bev has also scheduled West Virginia core training in Parkersburg and opportunity meetings in Charleston, Morgantown and Parkersburg.  In Northern Virginia, Teresa Johnson is planning to add new luncheons in Alexandria and Woodbridge.  The following week on November 9 there will be an associates meeting followed by a core training event.

Francois Exilhomme Report – Massachusetts and Rhode Island ended October with great “stats.”  Massachusetts is up 139 percent over last year and Rhode Island is up an astounding 1,400 percent.  Adding fuel to the fire, Rhode Island will host a blitz on Saturday and Massachusetts will host one the following Saturday.  This month’s statewide conference call will include Liz Foo and special recognition participants.  Promotion is now underway for the November 15 event with Darnell Self.

Danny Katoa Report – Danny says the islands finished October with a business briefing blitz on Saturday following the statewide conference call.  MCM Craig Hapner will be in Maui this week and Honolulu will host Jermaine Johnson for a week-long series of events.  Both Hapner and Johnson will participate in the Super Saturday in Maui.  Jason Lavender will be in islands later this month for a group training and APT.

Mark Michaud Report – In addition to the weekly business briefings and core trainings, Mark and his team have incorporated some Blastoff blitzes to encourage participation.  Mark has also shared an interesting personal story. He says as a result of some poor construction, he had a flooded basement which resulted in $23,000 in damages.  The HOW warranty paid the maximum of $15,000, leaving a short fall that the construction company would not pay.  A letter from Mark’s Pre-Paid provider law firm changed their “tune” with Mark receiving a check for $5,800.  As Mark put it, “That one letter paid for my membership for 18.5 years.”

Kevin Montville Report – Kevin says the main focus in New Hampshire for the coming week is on goal setting, Players Club and PBR’s.  He’s anticipating a good New Hampshire turn out for the November 15 event with Darnell Self in Quincy, Massachusetts.

Eddie Sturgis Report – This past Friday Eddie and other Oklahoma leaders were here at the corporate office to meet with home office staff about new plans for Oklahoma.  One key ingredient is to identify more prospects from small communities in the state.

Larry/Doni Smith Report – Arizona activity continues to brew. RM Thom Harrison reports activity in Avondale included: a Tuesday business briefing with 12 attending, a Wednesday twilight briefing with 11 attending, a core training with 32 associates attending and power lunch on Thursday with 7 associates attending.  Glendale held a luncheon with 37 attending, including 14 guests and Northern Arizona held a core training with Bruce and Kim Eldredge.  Thom Harrison and Director Dave McIntosh traveled to Bull Head City and Laughlin, Nevada on a prospecting mission.  In Phoenix, the October 28th twilight briefing included 14 attendees and a core training immediately afterwards.  Tempe also held a briefing on the 28th with 55 associates and 13 guests on hand to hear Tanisha Morgan and Harold Branch.  Tucson held Monday and Thursday core briefings and a Friday luncheon, according to RM’s Jonathan Conrad and Bobby Garcia.  Rounding things out in Arizona, Prescott held a business briefing with 9 attendees, according to Bruce Eldredge.

All this positive sales activity reminds me of something William “Wrigley” (1861-1932) said decades ago that still holds true today: “The art of salesmanship can be stated in four words: Believing something and convincing others.”  That’s something to chew on, don’t you think?

Cordially,

Harland C. Stonecipher

No Social Security COLA

By Aleshia Altizer

No Social Security COLA
For the first year since automatic adjustments were adopted in 1975, those who receive Social Security won’t get a cost-of living increase next year. The reason for this is falling consumer prices says a recent Associated Press article.

According to the article, the average monthly Social Security payment for all recipients is $1,094. Even though seniors may end up getting another round of $250 payments, with the high cost of living, many may struggle.

If you know someone who’s a retiree or soon to be, Pre-Paid Legal might just be the opportunity they’re looking for. It’s a great way to earn a little extra from home without having to cut back or go back to an 8-5 job.

Looking for a Seasonal Job Opportunity?

By Aleshia Altizer

Present II

Can you believe it? The holidays are just around the corner! Some retailers are already rolling out great deals and helpful services to entice shoppers this holiday season. One thing they won’t be offering in abundance, however, is seasonal work.

According to a recent CNNMoney article, those that are planning to take on a second job this holiday season, face serious competition from record numbers of unemployed and underemployed workers. Besides heavy competition, dismal sales have forced many businesses to cut back on seasonal hiring while other businesses are offering any seasonal work they have to existing employees.

Pre-Paid Legal offers a great way to earn extra cash for the holidays. But unlike seasonal jobs, Pre-Paid Legal’s Opportunity doesn’t end with the season. Instead you can work your business year round, earning commission in multiple ways.

The Green Light

The-green-light-logo_final

With the end of October approaching, it looks like there will be lots of “treats” being passed out to associates.  Are you reaching out for opportunity with the same enthusiasm as the little ones reach out for the candy dish?  I hope so.

Here’s The Green Light for the week:

Michael Humes Report – Mike was one of our featured speakers at the 2009 Provider Law Firm Black and Gold Banquet this past Friday night, and he did a great job of sharing his story with representatives from more than 70 provider law firms attending the event.  Back in the North East, Mike says the region experienced another strong week.  Dave Savula helped light some rockets with an event in Pittsburgh.  No doubt, that helped spike production there by 143 percent over the same period last year.  As a whole, Pennsylvania was up 46 percent for the year to week.  Larry King led a Super Saturday in Delaware and the state’s production was up 546 percent over last year.  Washington has also been on a roll with PBR’s and their production is 550 percent.  In Connecticut, new MCM Kevin Mack was a guest this past week and the state is up 110 percent in production over the same period last year.  Rounding out the region, both New Jersey and New York are also seeing production increases, 92-percent and 182-percent respectively.

Hal/Susan Faresh Report – Hal says the region’s calendar is “bursting” with new briefings, luncheons and training events.  This past week, Wilburn Smith was a guest at the Super Saturday event in Las Vegas.  The standing room only event included more than 160 attendees.  Due to illness, Wilburn was not able to participate in a Friday luncheon; however, RM C.A. Murff was able to step in for the event.  In northern California, RM Judy Samson reports the re-opening of the Redding market with a weekly business briefing and core training.  This past Saturday, Eastern Washington held a Super Saturday with Tiffany Mallot as guest speaker.  The event drew more than 600 attendees according to the event coordinator, RM Rey McCallum.  After his two-week excursion, Hal stayed closer to home this week, attending a Sacramento briefing on Tuesday and a Roseville briefing on Wednesday, along other area presentations each day.

Brooks Werkheiser Report – Brooks offers high praise for the Springdale, Arkansas event that we held at the Lisle Law Firm.  The two-day recruitment event, which included Mark Brown and Rob Vest, attracted a great deal attention and participation.  In addition to the attendance, Brooks says the event had a positive effect on the professionals at the law firm.  Down in Montgomery, there is a new business briefing started by Tuscaloosa RM Robert Parkerson.  All of Alabama, in fact, is in the growth mode. Mississippi is also doing well.  This past Saturday, Brooks participated in core training along with RM Mark Alexander.  Brooks is also keeping busy schedule this week with meetings in Meridian, Baton Rouge, Birmingham and a Super Saturday in a surprise location.

Ross Chantrel Report – Ross says the past week was exceptional with 10 evening presentations, 6 luncheons, 4 “Breakfasts with Fran” events and a fantastic Super Saturday in St. Louis with Rick Johnson providing exciting training and presentations. The Super Saturday brought in more associates with guests than “we have seen in a long time.” Rick Johnson also held a statewide conference call with Missouri associates on Wednesday night detailing the license procedure in Texas and revealing how the state maintained a #1 ranking in membership sales. Ross expects the best is yet to come predicting that this week will be one of the biggest featuring special events with John Mallott in St. Louis for a Tuesday night briefing and Wednesday luncheon and Mark Brown in Kansas City for a Friday luncheon and Super Saturday event.

Kevin Montville Report – Kevin reports that with a packed week ahead associates from across the state are re-engaging with even some disconnected associates asking, “What is this ‘Blast Off’ thing?” Even though a few bumps were encountered because of overload excitement during the website’s lift off, Kevin knows that the value of the title wave called “Blast Off” is incredible and we definitely agree. Meanwhile in the field, a Super Saturday in Portsmouth, NH with Nancy Montville, was so effective that every guest signed up with the membership and business.  Kevin says he sees more interest in the opportunity coming from business owners, such as a businesswoman who was introduced to “Blast Off” several weeks ago, signed on as an associate, and is now a PPL Manager. It is proof that success comes to those who believe in the product and make it their business to share the dream with others.

Mark Michaud Report – Mark says in the Northeast, the energy is high with associates previously out of the game returning to experience in an era of explosive growth.  At the Super Saturday last week in NH Kevin and Nancy Montville promoted the principles of the ten core commitments. Mark says timing in the marketplace is vital so that point is being brought to the forefront. His team has set a year-end goal of being in the top ten per capita, consistently. Considering the direction of the team and their focus on keeping it simple, I expect them to hit that target.

Patti Ross Report – Patti reports that a friendly competition between Alberta and British Columbia is stirring the pot this week. The Canadian teams are vying to see which Province has the most associates on the books for the Player’s Club 10 level by the end of October. The neighboring territories had equal numbers at start of the month, but by last Friday, Alberta was in the lead. The goal for both is to double their numbers at the November APTs. Patti says that now that “Blast Off” is launched and its Phase II has begun, the focus is on the prize as end of October approaches.

Ron Crutcher Report – In team news, Rodney and Thao Summerville traveled to help one of their associates in a team building effort, while activity for recruiting and production is still in full force with PBRs, business briefings and lunch meetings being conducted across the state. Ron also claims that Ohio helped crash the servers during the blastoff of “Blast Off.”  They are looking forward to an Advance Product Training with GVP Amilda Coffman and guest speaker Mike McCoy, and an out-of-town bus trip to the Super Regional in Illinois next week.

Considering these great reports, the month end of business will be a strong one.  Great recruiting events across North America continue to keep everyone’s spirits high. Even better, we are seeing people from all walks of life taking advantage of our unique business opportunity, including the Finance Manager for a large company who saw the vision and signed on after commenting “It just makes sense.” Her story is a treat that is worth sharing today.

Cordially,

Harland C. Stonecipher

The Truth About Wills

By Stacy Whelchel

Truth about wills photo

What do we know about the importance of a Will and a Pre-Paid Legal membership?

We know that members who complete their Wills are more likely to retain their Pre-Paid Legal memberships. We know that our Provider Attorney firms are excellent when it comes to well-respected lawyers prepared to handle all types of estate planning issues.

So what do you know about Wills? Are the following statements true or false?

  1. Estate planning is for rich people only.
  2. If I die without a Will, all my possessions will go to my spouse.

These statements are false. For more information on combating related myths and the true significance of Will preparation, check out this USA Today story. It could be a smart marketing tool for you to use to show the value of benefits offered by a Pre-Paid Legal membership.

Even though the topic of Wills may be a subject that’s difficult to approach, it should be stressed to prospects.  The importance of knowing that the people, places and things cherished in life are taken care of according to one’s final wishes is a thought that can be undeniably comforting.

More good news about Pre-Paid Legal Services

Joel Greenblatt, a respected investment advisor and strategist, has developed a performance ranking of the 3,500 largest stocks and Pre-Paid Legal Services ranks number 4 among these stocks.  John Reese, founder of Validea.com, has written an article about this and he describes the PPD performance as "impressive".

This John Reese story just appeared on Yahoo Finance. By the way, you can "vote" on this story on Yahoo, if after reading it, you find it valuable.

Along with our recent news about PPD’s # 66 ranking in the 2009 FORBES MAGAZINE list of "America’s 200 Best Small Companies", this is great news.

The Green Light

The-green-light-logo_final

Stephen Covey once said, “Your attitude determines you altitude.”  If that’s true – and I believe it is – we may need to start issuing oxygen masks to our associates.  This week’s level of activity demonstrates the commitment by our associates to make affordable legal services available to those who need access to the legal system.  This, coupled with the great news about our ascent on the Forbes Magazine list of “America’s 200 Best Small Companies,” underscores the fact that we are moving in the right direction.  That direction will take us to a new altitude.

Here’s The Green Light:

Hal/Susan Faresh Report – Hal’s travel schedule around the Pacific Northwest over the past two weeks has been dizzying.  From business briefings to core training to leadership dinners to PBR’s to Super Saturdays, he’s had consecutive stops in the following cities: San Francisco / South, Sacramento, Roseville (CA), Seattle, Albany (OR), Portland, Seattle (again), Roseville (again), San Rafael and Palo Alto.  During the past week the region set new attendance records at events that include: a San Francisco /South business briefing with Darnell Self, a San Francisco / East Bay Tuesday night briefing and Wednesday core training with Jermaine Johnson and a Roseville business briefing on Wednesday with RM C.A. Murff.  This week will also be packed activities and events, including a visit to Las Vegas by Wilburn Smith for a business briefing on Thursday, a luncheon on Friday and a Super Saturday.  This week, Hal’s special thanks go to California RM Judy Samson for her long-term efforts to maintain and grow her market.  Hal says, “Judy can always be counted on to act in the best interest of the company and to assist RM’s wherever there’s a need.”

Rob/Charlene MacKenzie Report – Last week was Thanksgiving in Canada and it appears there is a great deal to be thankful for in Ontario and Manitoba.  Rob and Charlene were busy every night this past week with business briefings leading up a weekend of activity, including two “standing-room only” events on Friday and then a Super Saturday that attracted more than 300 attendees.  Rob offers thanks to Platinum 5, MCM Mark Riches for a “phenomenal” presentation as guest speaker.  Looking toward November, Rob says Darnell Self and Michael Humes will be Canada on November 4 and 5 and there will be an upcoming open-house at the provider law firm of Mills & Mills.

Larry/Doni Smith Report – Larry and Doni were in Honolulu this past weekend to headline a successful Super Saturday event as well as a small business class that Doni led on Friday.  Back in Arizona, there was core training in Tucson that included 50 attendees and a stand-out presentation by Jamie Conrad.  On Thursday night, Sean Mikael spoke to 100 attendees (including 30 guests) about how to achieve success in our business.  The Tucson Super Saturday featured K.C. Call, who provided an inspiring message to hundreds of associates from the area, according to RM’s Jonathan Conrad and Bobby Garcia.  The West Valley region of Phoenix had an active week with a Blastoff presentation on Tuesday (presented by Paul Guerrero), a Wednesday event with MCM Brenda Anderson, followed by a core training event led by Brenda, RM Thom Harrison and Paul Guerrero.  East Valley was also active with a recruiting luncheon this past Friday with a presentation by ED Wayne Reid.

Mike Humes Report – The North East Region continues its “high altitude attitude.”  Production in each state in the region is up from the same week last year, including: Connecticut (128 percent), District of Columbia (450 percent!), Delaware (80 percent), New Jersey (173 percent), New York (142 percent) and Pennsylvania (166 percent).  Mike says there are more meetings and PBR’s in every market.  On Sunday, Darnell Self, Katrina Ferguson and Mike held a meeting blitz and added new associates, including an attorney that Mike began talking with more than a year ago.  As he puts, “Fortune is in the follow-up.”  For the coming week, Larry King will be in Delaware, Dave Savula will be in Pittsburgh and Kevin Mack will be in Connecticut.

Ross/Cindy Chantrel Report – In addition to their ongoing schedule of events in the Missouri and Kansas markets, Thomas Owens held a successful group training this past Saturday and Sunday in Missouri.  Missouri’s new Wednesday night statewide conference call was well received with 68 associates participating.  Guest speaker Don Thompson talked about the approach they use in Florida when a new associate comes on board.  This coming Saturday there will be a Super Saturday in St. Louis with Rick Johnson as the guest speaker.

Mark Michaud Report – Mark says the “commitment” in Maine and Vermont (and throughout New England) is also moving to a higher altitude.  Last week, there were well attended briefings in both northern and southern Maine and a Super Saturday that drew attendees from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts.  For the coming week, there will be a Super Saturday in Portsmouth, multiple briefings throughout the market and regional costume party for PPL associates at Mark’s house on Saturday evening.

Kevin Montville Report – Over the past two months, the momentum in New Hampshire has been better than it has been all year, says Kevin.  In addition to all the recent developments and opportunities, Kevin describes the Forbes Magazine listing as “icing on the blastoff cake.”  RM Thomas Duplessy (Massachusetts and Rhode Island) will be the featured speaker at the New Hampshire business briefing this week.  Also, there will be a Super Saturday this coming week with featured presentations by RVP’s Francois Exilohomme and Mark Michaud.

Francois Exilhomme Report – Massachusetts and Rhode Island also have the momentum.  Francois says recruiting is up in Massachusetts (by 60 percent) and in Rhode Island (by 650 percent!) for this past week compared to the same period in 2008.  According to Francois, the increases are producing results, including “belief” checks to those who make the commitment and act upon it.

Ken Smith/Patti Ross Report – Western Canada is seeing capacity attendance at its meetings and British Columbia is adding a new meeting which begins on October 26th.  There will also be a BC Super Saturday on October 24th.  Shining the spotlight on Alberta RM’s Linda Rasmussen and Jacquie Carstensen, Patti says, “Linda and Jacquie have helped drive recruiting to new heights in Northern Alberta (553 percent!) and Southern Alberta (800 percent!!).”

Brooks Werkheiser Report – Brooks is in Springdale, Arkansas (at the Lisle Law Firm) for 2 ½ days this week, along with Mark Brown and Rob Vest, for a series of opportunity meetings and group programs.  In Montgomery, Alabama, RM Robert Parkerson is holding a new opportunity meeting on Thursday.

Jack Bufkin Report – Recruiting in Tennessee is up by 180 percent last week, compared to the same time period in 2008, says Jack.  This week, Chattanooga will host an event with Darrin Kidd as the featured speaker and Harold Branch will be a featured speaker at a Nashville event this week.

Ron/Norma Crutcher Report – Ron says PBR’s were held in multiple locations in Ohio this past week, and that he and Norma travelled to Cleveland for a successful, well attended Super Saturday this past week.  Ronald Green of Georgia was the featured speaker and Ron says his presentation was excellent.

Keith/Carol Dickens Report – Darnell Self will be the guest speaker for a business luncheon and evening opportunity meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 20 in Louisville, Kentucky and this weekend Indiana will hold a statewide tool blitz.

That’s The Green Light for this week.  I hope you enjoy reading the good news in this report as much as I enjoy sharing it.  Each week, it becomes more obvious how much dedicated and successful activity is underway in all our markets.  I encourage you to keep up the great work and keep sharing your successes.  We can all profit from a good story.

Harland C. Stonecipher

Pre-Paid Legal In The News - FORBES

Forbes just ranked Pre-Paid Legal number 66 in the 200 Best Small Companies list released on October 14th.  On this same list, Pre-Paid Legal is ranked NUMBER ONE (1) in the Return on Equity (ROE).  According to investopedia.com (A Forbes Digital Company), "Return on equity measures a corporation's profitability by revealing how much profit a company generates with the money shareholders have invested."

Just to be on the list is a testament to the strength of where we've been.  And, to be ranked number one (1) in the ROE is no accident.  This indicates a dedication to resource utilization and allocation practices that produce good results.

Founded in 1972, Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. has enjoyed a remarkable 37 year success.  Built by Harland Stonecipher, who to this day, at 71 years of age, serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of this New York Stock Exchange listed company.  Pre-Paid Legal employs 725 full-time Oklahomans, and counts over 1.5 million families as members across North America.

The company’s legal service membership is unique.  Pre-Paid Legal Services provides its members affordable access to legal services from a network of qualified independent law firms.  We are personally familiar with many of the outstanding lawyers responsible for providing these services.  Each of us have toured the company’s home office and witnessed first-hand the operations.  We all know the executive management team, most of whom have served the company for a decade or more. They are responsive, honest and ethical in their leadership.

We understand the business opportunity that exists and applaud those who take advantage of it.  Pre-Paid Legal Services not only represents the free enterprise system as a corporation.  The company offers motivated individuals with an opportunity to create their own business based on this free market system.

We’ve personally witnessed the integrity of the company’s executive team.  Over the years, Pre-Paid Legal Services has been recognized for its leadership by national business publications, like Fortune, Forbes USA Today and others.  Just this year, DeMarche Associates, an independent investment research firm recognized Pre-Paid as one of the 100 best in the U.S. for its corporate investment strategy. Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. is a solid public company.

As part of its commitment to free enterprise, we think it’s important to highlight a few facts:

  1. Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. has not asked for a government bailout.
  2. To the contrary, the company pays its corporate taxes,
  3. and, as long-time sales associate John Hail said, “never missed a commission payment in 37 years.”

Famous Oklahoma humorist/philosopher Will Rogers said, “Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”  Harland Stonecipher's vision and charge, has always been to make equal justice for all the standard, not merely an ideal, Through a free enterprise opportunity Stonecipher and his team built a passionate and capable sales force to meet this charge.  In short, we think Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. is a company that leads by its own example.

There are beacons of hope in today’s business world.  There are companies that do things right.  There are true American-made success stories.  Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. fits the bill! We are proud to count the company and Harland Stonecipher as a friend.

Facing a Foreclosure? Six Ways a Lawyer Can Help.

By Aleshia Altizer

Facing a foreclosure

Financial woes are far from over as the jobless rate creeps ever closer to double digit numbers (in September it reached 9.8%). Struggling families continue to face job loss and foreclosures, and now, according to a recent article in the ABA Journal, many facing foreclosures are having trouble obtaining legal assistance. The article cites a new study from the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law which gives important facts on how difficult it is to obtain legal representation right now. The study further illustrates the need for legal access by listing six important ways lawyers protect families in foreclosures:

  1. Lawyers can raise a claim(s) that can protect homeowners from lenders and services who have broken the law.
  2. Lawyer can help homeowners renegotiate their loans.
  3. They can ensure the legal process is properly followed.
  4. Help homeowners to obtain protection of the bankruptcy law.
  5. Help tenants when the property is foreclosed.
  6. Give those affected by foreclosure a voice in policy reform.

Having a Pre-Paid Legal plan in place now, means that if you’re ever confronted with a legal issue as minor as a fender bender or as serious as a home foreclosure, you have a lawyer standing by to help you ensure your rights are protected.

Stonecipher.

The Green Light

The-green-light-logo_final

The good news is this past weekend 800 people in the San Francisco Bay area got to hear Darnell Self do his magic at a huge event organized by RM Mikal Mekki and his team.  The bad news is more than 200 people had to be turned away because there was “no room in the inn,” according Hal and Susan Faresh.  Mikal, in fact, had to pay some extra fees at the hotel due to the size of the event.  Some might see that as a problem.  My guess is Mikal sees it as an opportunity for another meeting.

This week, The Green Light demonstrates a wealth of opportunities:

Hal/Susan Faresh Report – In addition to the huge event noted above, across the bay, RM Kai Deering organized 3 Saturday tool blitzes in the Silicon Valley area.  This past Monday, Hal participated in a weekly briefing organized by RM’s Bobby and Dee Ward.  According to Hal, Bobby and Dee “have been tenacious in their efforts to build this market.”  On Tuesday, Hal was in Sacramento for a series of presentations and then on to core training in Seattle on Thursday.  This past Friday, Sue Martines of Albany, Oregon organized a successful Friday night leadership dinner, along with a successful Super Saturday event.  Commenting on Sue’s enthusiasm, Hal says whether there are 10 people or 100 people, Sue brings the same level of energy to the task.  This week, Hal will be back in Seattle for a PBR, more presentations and training sessions. On Wednesday, he will be in Roseville, California for a meeting that features Las Vegas RM C.A. Murff and then on to San Rafael on Thursday for a new business briefing.

Ross/Cindy Chantrel Report – MO-KAN (Missouri and Kansas) continues its regular schedule of 12 evening business presentations and 6 luncheon events.  Recently a new luncheon was added in St. Louis and it’s already a well attended event.  In addition to the ongoing events, this weekend, Thomas Owens will lead a group training school program.  To enhance their existing program, Ross said they will begin a statewide Monday night call that utilizes leaders from other states to share their experience.  Don Thompson is the first scheduled participant for this new initiative.

Darrin Kidd Report – Darrin says it’s going great in both Virginia and West Virginia with last week’s year to date recruiting up 193 percent in Virginia and 100 percent in West Virginia.  In addition to blitzes, new recruiting events are underway in both states with Charlottesville, Virginia being the most recent start-up event.  This Saturday, Darrin is working on a “double feature” Super Saturday event in Virginia from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., followed by a lunch and tour of the Framme Law Firm.

Brooks Werkheiser Report – Brooks says the recruiting is underway for our special event in Northwest Arkansas on October 20 and 21.  The event will include Mark Brown, Rob Vest and attorneys from the Lisle Law Firm.  This will be an excellent opportunity to leverage Pre-Paid Legal’s presence in the area to generate new recruits.  Brooks says momentum continues in his four-state region with Alabama and Louisiana at peak performance.  On Saturday, Brooks was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana where Patrick Shaw offered a “powerful” presentation.  Brooks says the Hamontrees, the Gidcumbs, Dr. Blaine Laverne and Jerry Broadhead continue to provide leadership in growing the Louisiana market.  In Mississippi, Brooks recruited 2 new associates and he’s at work on a Chrysler dealership to create an opportunity where there is much pain.

Larry/Doni Smith Report – Arizona, as always, demonstrates strong statewide activity.  This past Tuesday in Phoenix, Silver Executive Wayne Reid led a business briefing with 9 guests and 27 associates attending.  There was also a meeting in Yuma that included 10 associates.  Tucson held a successful luncheon with 16 guests and associates attending, including a number of Realtors and Insurance Brokers.  On Wednesday, Platinum Jermaine Johnson from California was the guest speaker for a Phoenix business briefing and core training that included 66 associates and 38 guests.  This past weekend there was also a group school training event that included 45 people -- more than double the usual number of attendees at this event.

Danny Katoa Report – “Override October” continues in the islands, according to Danny, with executive directors coming on regularly.  Maui held back-to-back business briefings on Wednesday and Thursday this past week with more than 85 guests attending these events.  On Friday and Super Saturday this weekend, RVP Larry and Doni Smith will bring their inspiration and enthusiasm to the islands.

Keith/Carol Dickens Report – Keith and Carol say that Melanie Lawson provided an “awesome” training and retention presentation at the Super Saturday this past weekend in Indianapolis.  The program also featured John Malott.  Keith says, John “poured his heart into our teams” and as a result of this program, he anticipates an added bump in production in both Indiana and Kentucky.

That’s another strong week of activity.  I’ve heard it said, “If we are facing in the right direction, all we have to do is keep on walking.”  My question is: how fast can we walk?

Cordially,

Harland C. Stonecipher

It’s Bad for Business: Marketing Scams Grab Revenue and Steal Identities

By Stacy Whelchel

Grabbing for business photo

Identity theft involving individuals has, unfortunately, become a common theme. Too often we see stories describing how vulnerable moments have led to confidential information being stolen and eventually abused by illicit mass marketers.

However, it’s not just a one-on-one crime. Did you know that businesses of every shape and size are also targets of these illegal activities?

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has reported that identity theft and mass marketing scams seek out companies of every kind. The results can be a loss of a few hundred dollars, at first, but easily grow out of control and do lasting financial damage if the targeted company has insufficient internal controls, according to this FBI report.

The ploy of the schemes runs from fake office supply companies to false loan scams, and more. The FBI says education of this potential problem is vital for you and your business workforce, including always asking for offers of services in writing and requiring a written contract or purchase order for any transaction.

Security of your information and the submitted data of your recruits and the members you enroll is crucial to Pre-Paid Legal.  To help those you approach understand that your company is solidly and securely designed to offer the services and tools needed to maintain and grow profits, use company approved and/or provided materials.  Be sure to check out the Supply Store through the Pre-Paid Legal website when you need brochures or other marketing items that best present the product and professionally represent you and your company.

Happy Thanksgiving, Canada!

Pre-Paid Legal wishes all of our Canadian Members and Associates a very happy Thanksgiving!

Saving Money and the Earth One Home Energy Tax Credit at a Time

By Stacy Whelchel

Saving money and energy story photo

Have you taken advantage of the energy and money saving incentives in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act?

If you’re unfamiliar with the multi-billion dollar federal bill signed into law in February, the basic objectives included creating and saving jobs, spurring economic activity and fostering long term economic growth.

Part of the economic stimulus package offers several opportunities to save money when purchasing high efficiency appliances and energy saving vehicles. The legislation also includes incentives for those interested in making upgrades in their homes through Home Energy Efficiency Improvement Tax Credits.

Home Energy Tax Credits are available to consumers who purchase specific products, such as energy-efficient windows, insulation, doors, roofs, and heating and cooling equipment, installed in existing homes. Homeowners can receive a tax credit for 30% of the cost, up to $1,500, for improvements placed “in service” from Jan. 1, 2009, to at least Dec. 31, 2010. You can check out energystar.gov for a complete summary of energy efficiency tax credits available.

With the fall in full swing and winter winds not far away, there is no time like the present to get home repairs underway. Not only do you have financial incentives to get it done, you also have a great Provider Attorney ready to review contracts with everyone you hire to work on your home.

Tips for Spotting Phone Scams

By Aleshia Altizer

Tips for Spotting Phone Scams

Whether or not you’ve signed up for the Do Not Call Registry, there are companies/organizations that can still call you; like political organizations, charities, and telephone surveyors. If you gave written permission for a company to contact you or have an existing relationship with a company, they may call. Scammers will often call posing as one of these. The FTC lists some important questions you should ask yourself the next time you get a sales call.

  1. Who’s calling – and why? Telemarketers are supposed to inform that the call is a sales call, give the seller’s name and the product for sale before going into the sales pitch.

  2. What’s their hurry? Most businesses will give you time and should be willing to provide written information about the offer before asking you to commit. Don’t let them rush you.

  3. If it’s free, why are they asking me to pay? If you are asked to pay anything for something they are telling you is “free” then it’s not a prize or gift: it’s a purchase.

  4. Why am I “confirming” my account information – or giving it out at all? Even if the business calling already has your account info, they may be trying to get you to say okay so they can charge you and claim you approved it.

Remember, sales calls may only be made between 8 am and 9 pm, and if you don’t want a business to call you again tell them. Pre-Paid Legal Members have the peace of mind in knowing that anytime they’re confronted by a possible scam or faced with harassment from debt collectors, they can call their provider attorney to look over documents and offer sound legal advice.
